Miniseries | Episode 3: Pontine Islands

Bell' Italia

Country & People/Travel, Germany/Italy 2012

The Pontine Islands lie off the coast of Rome and are a popular destination for Italians, but outside the country they are still considered an insider tip. They show Italy like in a picture book: pastel-coloured houses, small fishing boats, lonely sandy beaches and turquoise-blue sea. Ponza is the name of the largest island in the archipelago. The rich and beautiful of high society anchor their yachts in the bays of the island, stroll along the promenade or visit the gourmet restaurants. The interplay between the luxury of the guests and the simple life of the fishermen is what makes Ponza so appealing. The islanders are devout Catholics and venerate San Silverio. They celebrate their patron saint every year with a festival. The highlight is a procession that leads out to sea.
