Films celebrating the history of Pride, love, diversity and acceptance.
Every year, 1 June marks the beginning of Pride Month, a month-long celebration that takes place around the world. In celebration of Pride Month 2024, we present a selection of feature films, documentaries and series that seek to celebrate the lives and impact LGBTQIA+ activists have had on the history and present of North America and worldwide.
Historically, Pride Month dates back to the so-called Stonewall Riots in New York City on 28 June 1969, a series of violent, unplanned demonstrations that pitted the US LGBTQIA+ community against New York City police officers. These were the first demonstrations in which gay and transgender people marched for their rights. One of these demonstrations escalated at the Stonewall Inn gay bar on Christopher Street - it became a turning point for the US LGBTQIA+ movement. A year later, on the anniversary, LGBTQIA+ activists gathered again in New York to commemorate the uprising. This march became known as Christopher Street Day.
Today, Pride Month is seen as an important month to honour the LGBTQIA+ community, raise awareness and promote equality.
