Every August, the Philippines celebrates "Buwan ng Wika" (Month of Language), an event dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Filipino languages and cultures. "Buwan ng Wika" commemorates and celebrates the establishment of a national language to unite the country's diverse ethno-linguistic groups. In 1937, Tagalog was chosen as the national language, which later became Filipino. Since then, it has been regarded as the culmination and expression of Filipino culture, and is of great importance to the unity and identity of the country. At the same time, it emphasises recognition and respect for the many dialects and languages, and celebrates Filipino history and traditional dances, music, literature and works of art. In all, more than 170 languages are spoken in the Philippines.
